Birmingham Summer Institute

Master Gardener 2019 intern Jim Goyer recently taught 3-6th grade students at the Birmingham Summer Institute, a special summer program that reinforces reading and STEM skills for children in underperforming schools. Jim developed his lesson plan as a part of his intern group project. The students reviewed the plant life cycle using seedlings started the week before, a very healthy cherry tomato plant Jim had raised, and, finally, vegetables from the market. Two weeks previously, Jim, Fletcher Harvey and others had accompanied the students on an educational tour of the Botanical Gardens, led by Ellen Hardy.
